A Hope Hemp

A Hope Hemp is a hemp brand established in 1998 by Stay Gold Company from Osaka, Japan. A Hope Hemp was founded with the goal to better utilize hemp as a cotton alternative and to spread the use of hemp based fabrics. To this day over 30 years later, their purpose stays the same as they continue to create fashionable sustainable clothing.

In the beginning A Hope Hemp started with making T-shirts. They believed that even basic T-shirts could be elevated with the use of hemp fabrics. By using these fabrics, all T-shirts could have an everlasting first wear feeling no matter how many times the shirt is washed. For A Hope Hemp’s 30th anniversary, we collaborated with the fabric dying company “JAVARA” and Designer Yu Sugino to create a special tie dye T-shirt. The stencil for the T-shirt was created by Daisuke Matsumoto of “Whemp”.

A Hope Hemp took a big leap and started the manufacturing of socks in 2002. These socks were the first hemp cotton socks to be sold in Japan. The socks are created on machines hand operated by artisans in Nara, Japan who use a vintage threading machine called the 60 thread machine. This machine requires a great deal of attention and an extreme eye for detail. The 60 thread machine creates one thread of yarn with 60 individual strands of yarn, which creates perfect material for a well-balanced pair of socks that will keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
