Warehouse & Co. Lot 3104 Flannel Shirts (Pattern D) - Red (One Wash)

Warehouse flannel shirts are made using power looms, which are only found in limited areas of Japan. The reason we use power looms to make flannel isn't simply to create "selvedge flannel"—selvedge is merely a by-product. The purpose is to use power looms to finish the fabric without losing the texture of the uneven yarn. Like denim, the yarn used to weave vintage flannel shirts was uneven in the past. Weaving this yarn with high tension on a modern loom would result in a different fabric, destroying the original properties of the yarn. By weaving on an old-fashioned power loom, we are able to weave the fabric without losing the inherent unevenness of the yarn. The power looms used to weave flannel shirts are twill looms, just like denim. Because flannel shirts require patterns, they are designed to weave multicolored yarns. The warp threads move up and down in a complex pattern, while shuttles carrying different colored weft threads alternate between them. In this way, the flannel is woven with the right amount of tension typical of a power loom, and the fabric is made without losing the inherent unevenness of each thread. The finished flannel fabric is brushed on the back, following the manufacturing method of the time. Brushing gives the pattern a soft look. Further brushing creates volume in the fabric, elevating the unique feel of a power loom to an even softer texture. In this way, power loom-woven flannel has a texture that can only be achieved by reproducing the texture from the yarn itself. The easiest way to tell is by the presence or absence of selvedge (edge), and Warehouse uses selvedge in the gusset, just like vintage flannel shirts up until the 1960s.
